Ecology Projects

Ecology is at the center of most of our graduate led research projects at ORCAA.  Acoustic monitoring is a cost effective, minimally invasive, and technologically efficient method for collecting data about both marine and terrestrial organisms.  Projects within our lab range from using acoustics to detect cryptic or pelagic species (including beacked whales, sperm whales and dolphins) to using passive acoustics to learn about how animals use or respond to noise in the environment (species include humpback whales, pacific chorus frogs, and wolves).  Further, at ORCAA we use passive acoustic monitoring to generate long term data sets that enable us to assess changes over time and space, animal distribution and density, and to monitor responses to shifting physical baselines.
